Set in the paranoia-steeped year of 1955, That’s Not My Neighbor immerses players in the role of a vigilant doorman tasked by the Doppelganger Detection Department (D.D.D.) to guard an unassuming apartment building from a bizarre and terrifying threat. As the game begins, players find themselves stationed behind a glass window in their office, the first line of defense against a sudden surge of doppelgangers—sinister beings that mimic human appearance with nefarious intentions. Your primary duty is to scrutinize each individual requesting entry, cross-referencing their provided paperwork against official records, and using various items in your office to confirm their identities. The challenge lies in the fact that these shape-shifters are indistinguishable from the building’s legitimate residents, turning every shift into a high-stakes game of detection and decision.

Intense Gameplay and Strategic Decision-Making

The gameplay of That’s Not My Neighbor is divided into two main modes: Arcade Mode and Nightmare Mode, each offering a unique level of intensity and complexity. In both modes, players must carefully analyze each visitor, distinguishing genuine neighbors from their monstrous counterparts who seek to infiltrate the apartment and wreak havoc. The consequences of each decision are dire; admitting a doppelganger results in a gruesome end, for the player and potentially for other residents as well. The game’s tension is amplified by the detailed feedback system at the end of each day, which reviews the player’s performance by showing the number of doppelgangers caught, neighbors accidentally killed, and breaches allowed. This results screen, which can sometimes be blood-stained as a stark reminder of any failures, also offers a “Click to see details” option, providing insights into mistakes made and offering lessons for future shifts. This feature allows players to refine their techniques and strategies in identifying these deadly impostors, enhancing their vigilance for subsequent rounds.
